This week’s Baby and Toddler Friendly Cottage of the Week is a real gem for train lovers! The Old Station has 3 converted self catering baby and toddler friendly train carriages in Allerston on the edge of the beautiful North York Moors.
These baby and toddler friendly train carriages have been lovingly restored and have all the facilities you’d expect from a baby and toddler friendly cottage, as well as 2 acres of grounds to run around in outside. Carol, one of the owners of the Old Station, tells us all about them below.
Tell me a little bit about your baby and toddler friendly train carriages
We have three 4 star self catering holiday railway carriages at a closed station in North Yorkshire between Scarborough and Pickering and north east of York. Our carriages are at the edge of a village, surrounded by fields.
What kind of accommodation do you have?
The accommodation is in converted railway carriages. We have two 3 bedroom carriages and one 2 bedroom carriage.
There is a kitchen, lounge and bathroom in each plus central heating and all the facilities you would expect to find in 4* accommodation.
In a nutshell, why is your property baby and toddler friendly?
We provide cots, cot bedding, bed guards and highchairs all free of charge.
We provide games, books and toys plus a good selection of DVD’s.
There is an outdoor play area with a baby swing, slide and see-saw swing. We provide small bikes and pedal toys.
The carriages are all on one level and the carriage doors can’t be opened by small children as you have to put the window down and use the handle on the outside!
We provide a washing machine and tumble dryer free of charge. There is an airing cupboard in each carriage.
What are the best baby and toddler friendly days out in the local area?
In the local area we have Dalby forest with special pushchair friendly walking trails.
There is also the Rydale Folk Museum with activities for small children and farm animals to see.
The National Railway Museum in York is a good child friendly visit, (especially in bad weather).
There is Playdale farm at Cayton and of course the coast is just 12 miles away.
Scarborough, Whitby, Filey and Bridlington all have lovely beaches.
How far is the nearest shop?
The nearest shops are three miles away although there is a caravan park within walking distance with a well stocked shop and a play area. There is also a play park at the adjacent village of Ebberston.
How much does your property cost for an average week in June?
A week in June costs £516 for up to 6 people + a cot.
